Gurdjieff believed that most people live in a state of "waking sleep." He thought people are not truly aware of themselves or their own lives. He taught that it is possible to wake up to a higher state of consciousness. This helps people serve their true purpose as human beings. One of his students, P. D. Ouspensky, called these teachings the "Fourth Way."

To understand his ideas, one must look at how he taught. His system was complex and used many deep ideas. Some of these ideas even used scientific words to explain things. He taught his students through different methods to help them become more aware. These methods included special movements and study groups. He wanted people to move past just thinking or feeling. He wanted them to use their whole selves to learn. This way of learning helped people try to reach a higher state of being.

Gurdjieff's life began in the city of Alexandropol. This city is now called Gyumri in Armenia. His father, Ioannis Georgiades, was a Greek man. He owned many large herds of cattle and sheep. Growing up in a place with many different cultures helped him. He learned to speak Armenian, Pontic Greek, Russian, and Turkish.

As a young man, Gurdjieff went on many travels. He searched for hidden truths that science could not explain. He traveled to places like Egypt, Iran, India, and Tibet. He even wrote about walking across the Gobi desert on stilts. In his book, "Meetings with Remarkable Men," he tells stories of his journeys. He arrived in Moscow in 1912 and began teaching students. He also married a Polish woman named Julia Ostrowska in Saint Petersburg. His life was full of many different experiences and cultures.
