philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

A thinker named John Stuart Mill wrote a book in 1861. He called it Utilitarianism. This book explains a way to think about being good. It is a famous work in the study of ethics.

Mill believed that happiness is the most important thing. He said we should try to make the most happiness for everyone. He called this the greatest-happiness principle. He thought happiness meant feeling pleasure and not feeling pain.

Some people criticized his ideas. They said his way of thinking was too simple. They even said it was only for animals. Mill did not agree. He said there are different kinds of joy. He thought learning and art were higher joys than bodily pleasure.

Mill also spoke about rules. He said we should follow rules like telling the truth. These rules help society stay well. He thought humans are social animals. We naturally want to be close to others. This helps us care about the happiness of the group. His book is still studied in many schools today.
