Act utilitarianism

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people think about what is right. This is called act utilitarianism. It is a way to make choices. It looks at one specific moment. The goal is to get the best results.

Jeremy Bentham was a famous thinker. He had a big idea. He called it the principle of utility. This means seeking the most happiness for many people. He said we have two masters. These are pain and pleasure. He thought they tell us what to do.

Other thinkers like John Stuart Mill agreed. They said happiness is like pleasure. They also said it means having no pain.

Some people do not like this idea. They say it might allow bad things. They worry it could allow torture. This would happen if it made enough people happy.

There is another idea called rule utilitarianism. This way looks at rules. It asks if a rule makes people happy. It does not just look at one act. It looks at what happens if everyone follows a rule. This may help avoid some problems.
