Secular morality

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

People have many ideas about right and wrong. Some people use religion to guide them. Others use secular morality. This means finding ways to be good without religion.

One way is called humanism. Humanists believe people can lead happy lives. They think we can be good without a god. They use science and logic to find the truth.

Another idea is consequentialism. These thinkers look at goals. They judge an action by its results. If an action leads to a good outcome, it is right. One type is called utilitarianism. It aims for the most happiness for many people.

Some people believe religion is needed for morality. They think we need a higher power to set rules. This idea is very old. Some say it is 4,000 years old. Others say it is newer.

But many thinkers disagree. They say morality and religion are different things. They believe we can follow rules without a faith. Some say religion can even be a poor guide. They point to many bad things done in the past. The debate about how to be good continues.
