Immanuel Kant was a German thinker.

He wrote about how we should act. He believed we should use reason to find the truth. This way of thinking is called Kantian ethics.

Kant said that a good will is the best thing. A good will means doing what is right just because it is right. Doing a good thing to get a prize is not the same. For Kant, we must act out of duty. Duty means following the moral law.

He had a main rule. It is called the categorical imperative. This rule is different from a choice made for a goal. For example, you go to a doctor to get well. That is a choice based on a want. But the categorical imperative is a duty for everyone.

One part of this rule is universalizability. This means you should only act on rules that could work for everyone. If everyone broke promises, the idea of a promise would fail. Another part is to respect people. We must never use people like tools. We must treat every person as important in themselves.
