Deontology

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Some people think being good means following rules. This idea is called deontology. It says an action is right or wrong based on rules. It does not matter what happens next. The results are not the main thing. Instead, the rules and duties matter most.

Immanuel Kant was a famous thinker. He said we must act out of duty. He thought our motives are what count. A good will is the only thing that is truly good. This means doing what is right because it is your duty. For example, lying is wrong even if it helps someone.

Other people follow different kinds of rules. Some believe in divine command theory. This means God sets the rules. People do what is right because God said so.

Another thinker, W. D. Ross, had a different view. He said we have many duties. We might have a duty to tell the truth. We might also have a duty to help others. Sometimes these duties clash. This can create a hard choice.

People still study these ideas today. They wonder how to make the best choices.
