Some people think about what it means to be good. They focus on a person's character. This way of thinking is called virtue ethics.

In this view, a virtue is a good trait. It is a way to think and act well. A vice is a bad trait. It is a way to think and act poorly. These are not just habits. They are part of who a person is.

Many thinkers say virtues help us flourish. To flourish means to live a very good life. The Greek thinker Aristotle wrote a lot about this. He said the goal of life is eudaimonia. This word can mean happiness or well-being. For Aristotle, being good is how we use our reason. We do this in a community of people.

Being virtuous involves both the mind and feelings. A good person knows the right thing to do. They also feel the right way about it. For example, a generous person helps others with joy. They do not feel bad about helping. Some thinkers also talk about cardinal virtues. These include wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance.
