Deontology

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Some people think being good means following rules. This idea is called deontology. It is a way of thinking about right and wrong. In this view, an action is right if it follows a rule. The results of the action do not matter as much. We do not look at the consequences to decide if something is good. Instead, we look at the action itself. This is often called duty-based ethics. It is different from other ideas like utilitarianism.

How does deontology work in real life? It depends on where the rules come from. Some people follow rules from the universe. Others follow religious laws. Some follow rules from their own culture. A person might even follow their own personal values. These rules can sometimes clash with what a person wants to do. In deontology, doing your duty is the most important part. You do the right thing because it is the rule. You do not do it just to get a good result. This makes the focus stay on the choice itself.

Many thinkers have shaped these ideas over time. Jeremy Bentham used the word deontology before 1816. He saw it as a way to judge what is proper. Later, a man named C. D. Broad used the term in 1930. He wrote about it in his book, Five Types of Ethical Theory. One of the most famous thinkers was Immanuel Kant. He lived in the 1700s and had big ideas about duty. He believed that having a "good will" was the only truly good thing.

Kant had specific ways to test if a choice was right. He said we should act only on rules that could become universal laws. This means everyone should be able to follow the same rule. He also said we should treat people as ends in themselves. We should never use people just as a tool to get something. Another idea is divine command theory. This theory says an action is right if God commands it. People like Ralph Cudworth and René Descartes held this view. For them, duty comes directly from God's word.

Not everyone agrees on how many rules we have. W. D. Ross thought there were many different duties. He listed things like the duty to keep promises. He also listed the duty to tell the truth. Sometimes these duties can bump into each other. This can create a hard choice called a moral dilemma. Modern thinkers like Thomas Nagel and Roger Scruton still study these topics. They look at how we decide what is right. Even today, people use these ideas to think about fairness and duty.
