Utilitarianism is a family of ideas about how we should act.

These ideas suggest we should choose actions that create the most happiness. This goal is often called maximizing utility. Utility means making sure there is plenty of well-being for everyone. Some people call this way of thinking consequentialism. This means the results of an action are what matter most. We judge if an act is right by its outcome.

Some thinkers focus on the happiness of all people. Others believe we should consider all living, feeling beings equally.

To make these choices, some thinkers use a step-by-step method. Jeremy Bentham created a way to measure feelings called the hedonic calculus. He believed we could calculate the value of pleasure and pain. One way to do this is to look at intensity. We can also look at how long a feeling lasts. We might check how certain a result will be. It is also important to see how many people are affected. This helps people decide which choice brings the greatest good.

Many different people have shared these ideas throughout history. Long ago, the Greek thinkers Aristippus and Epicurus studied happiness. In ancient China, a philosopher named Mozi wanted to maximize benefit. He also wanted to stop harm from happening. In the 8th century, Shantideva wrote in India about helping all beings. He wanted to end suffering for everyone. In the 1700s, Francis Hutcheson used math to look at morality. He said the best action brings happiness to the most people. These early ideas helped build the modern version we know today.

Modern utilitarianism became very clear in the 18th and 19th centuries. Jeremy Bentham is often called the founder of this tradition. He wrote a famous book in 1780 about these principles. Later, John Stuart Mill became a very important leader for these ideas. Mill wrote a book called Utilitarianism in 1861. He helped make the term more popular for everyone to use. Other thinkers like Henry Sidgwick and R. M. Hare also worked on these ideas. Even today, thinkers like Peter Singer continue to use these concepts.

These ideas are not just for old books. People use them to solve many real-world problems today. They help us think about how to help people in poverty. They are used when we talk about social welfare and justice. Some people use these ideas to decide how to treat animals. They even help us think about big risks to all of humanity. By looking at the results of our actions, we try to build a better world. It is a way to weigh our choices against the needs of others.
