Bentham had a big idea called utilitarianism. He believed rules should make people happy. He said we should aim for the greatest happiness for the most people. He wanted many changes in society. He spoke up for the rights of women and animals. He also wanted to end slavery.

Bentham designed a new kind of prison. He called it a Panopticon. It was a round building. A few guards could watch many people at once. He hoped the government would build it. They did not use his plan, but his ideas were still important.

He also helped change how schools and courts work. He wanted more people to have access to learning. This helped start a famous school called UCL.

When Bentham died in 1832, he left a strange wish. He wanted his body to be kept as a memorial. This is called an auto-icon. It is a model of himself. You can see it at UCL today.
