He lived from 1685 to 1753. He was a writer and a priest. He is known for a big idea called immaterialism. This is a belief that physical objects are not made of matter. Instead, he thought things like chairs and tables are ideas in the mind. To him, objects only exist if they are being seen or felt.

Berkeley wrote many books. One book was about how we see things. He said we see light and color rather than solid objects. He also wrote a book called "Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous." In this book, he used two characters to talk about his ideas. One character, Philonous, stood for his views. The other, Hylas, stood for his opponents.

He traveled to many places. He even lived on a farm in America. He wanted to start a college in Bermuda. His ideas changed how people thought about the world. Today, a city in California and a college at Yale bear his name.
