A method is a planned way to reach a goal.

It uses a set of steps to solve a problem. For example, sautéing is a method for cooking. Using radiocarbon dating is a method to find the age of old objects. Methodology is the study of these methods. It looks at how we pick steps and how we use them. It also compares different ways to see which works best.

There are two main ways to do research. The first way is called quantitative research. This is common in natural science. It uses precise numbers and measurements. Scientists use the scientific method to find laws. They make a guess, called a hypothesis, and then test it with an experiment.

The second way is called qualitative research. This is common in social science. It does not focus on exact numbers. Instead, it looks for deep meaning. People use tools like interviews or surveys to learn more. Some researchers now use mixed-methods. This means they use both ways together.

Some people argue about methodology. Some say it is not useful to study methods. Others think it might limit a researcher's creativity. However, many say a good methodology helps find reliable facts in a smart way.
