Quantitative research

math Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some people study the world using numbers. This is called quantitative research.

In this work, researchers look for facts they can count. They use things like statistics and percentages. These are called quantitative data. This data is in numerical form. Researchers use math to test their ideas. They want to see if their theories are true. This helps them make good guesses about the world.

Many fields use these methods. Doctors use them to study health. Experts use them to study money. People also use them in sociology and psychology. One study looked at many sociology papers. It found that about two-thirds used these math methods.

Sometimes, scientists use other tools too. They might use qualitative research. This means they look at words or stories. Qualitative research helps explain the meaning behind things. Often, scientists use both ways together. This is called mixed-methods research.

Numbers can also act as a stand-in. We call these proxies. For example, scientists study tree rings. The width of a ring can show past weather. This helps us learn about old temperatures.
