What does it mean when we use words?

Philosophers study this. They look at how signs and words relate to things. One way to think about meaning is through signs. Some signs are ideas in our minds. Other signs are words we use to talk.

Many thinkers have different ideas about truth. One idea is called correspondence theory. This theory says truth is like a match. A statement is true if it matches the real world. Ancient thinkers like Plato and Aristotle studied this idea.

Another idea is coherence theory. This says truth is about a good fit. Ideas must fit well within a large system of other ideas. Some thinkers, like Immanuel Kant, built large systems this way.

Some people believe in constructivism. This view says we build meaning through our culture. It says our social lives shape what we know. Others believe in consensus theory. This means truth is what a group agrees upon.

Finally, there is pragmatic theory. This view says we find truth by using ideas. We see if an idea works when we put it into practice. This was studied by thinkers like William James.
