A concept is a big idea in the mind.

These ideas help us understand the world. We use them to group things together. This is called categorization. It helps us make sense of many things at once. For example, the concept of a tree helps us see many different plants as one kind of thing.

Concepts can be part of a ladder. We call these hierarchies. A high level might be "furniture." A lower level could be "chair." An even lower level might be "easy chair."

Most people use a middle level to name things. This is called a basic level.

Some ideas are concrete. We can see or touch them, like an apple. Other ideas are abstract. These are harder to learn. They are things like "infinity." Some concepts are even empty. A unicorn is an empty concept because it is not real. We can also make new ideas. We can join "white" and "cat" to make a "white cat." This helps our minds work and talk to others.
