Bribery is the corrupt solicitation, payment, or acceptance of a private favor to influence official actions. This act is intended to make a person in a position of power act against their duty. It goes against the rules of honesty and integrity. A bribe is not always a direct cash payment. It can involve goods, property, or the promise of a future advantage. This might include a lucrative contract, a promotion, or even a higher-paying job.

To understand bribery, one must distinguish it from legal transactions. A gift is not a bribe if it is available to everyone on an equivalent basis. For example, a rebate on an electric bill is legal if every residential customer receives it. However, giving a specific discount to a regulator to influence their decisions is bribery. The mechanism involves an exchange where an undue advantage is offered to change a person's conduct. This can be an active bribe, where someone offers an advantage, or a passive bribe, where an official requests or accepts one.

Bribery takes many different forms depending on the situation. It can be a secret commission made by an agent without their principal's knowledge. It might appear as a "sweetener," a "kickback," or a "facilitation payment." Some people use the term "grease payments" to describe money paid to officials to speed up ministerial acts. These are acts that officials are already legally required to perform. In some cases, a person might be forced to pay a bribe, which is known as extortion.

Different cultures and languages have unique ways of describing these acts. In German, the term "lubricant money" is sometimes used. In some Spanish-speaking countries, a bribe is called a "bite." In Arab countries, terms like "baksheesh" or "shay" are common. French-speaking regions may refer to "under-the-table" commissions. These cultural differences also affect legality. For instance, political campaign contributions are legal in the United States if they follow election laws. However, those same cash contributions may be criminal acts in other countries.

History and research show that bribery has massive global consequences. In 2007, bribery was estimated to be worth around one trillion dollars worldwide. When bribery becomes a standard social norm, it is very difficult to stop. Researchers found that a punishment that works in one country might fail in another. This is because every society is different. If bribery becomes a way of life in a government, that state is called a kleptocracy. This can lead to citizens feeling less connected to their own country or region.

Bribery also impacts trade and the economy in complex ways. Some studies suggest that bribery can actually increase a country's exports through unfair incentives. At the same time, it can decrease imports because domestic firms lose interest in foreign markets. Many firms are willing to risk the consequences of detection if the financial returns are high enough. Furthermore, private firms are often found to pay more bribes abroad than public firms. This affects how money and goods move between different nations.

Even the field of medicine is not immune to these influences. Pharmaceutical corporations may try to entice doctors to prescribe specific drugs through gifts. The American Medical Association has created ethical guidelines to prevent this. They suggest physicians should not accept gifts related to their prescribing practices. In some regions, such as parts of the former Eastern Bloc, patients may offer gifts to medical staff to ensure standard care. This often happens in places where medical professionals are underpaid.

International organizations are working to build stronger, fairer institutions. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 aims to substantially reduce corruption and bribery. This is part of a global effort to ensure peace and justice. Many countries have also changed their tax laws to discourage these acts. For example, the OECD recommended that member countries stop allowing bribes to be tax-deductible. By making the early steps of a corrupt deal illegal, countries hope to send a clear signal. The goal is to make bribery a crime that is easier to prosecute and harder to sustain.
