Xenophobia is a word used to describe the fear or dislike of people who seem different. This feeling often happens when one group thinks there is a conflict with another group. People might feel suspicious of what others are doing. They might also worry about losing their own national or racial identity. Some people even want to stop a certain group from being present at all. A researcher named Guido Bolaffi says this can also look like an uncritical praise of another culture. This happens when a culture is seen as something strange or exotic rather than real.

This way of thinking has existed for a very long time. In ancient Egypt, people used special writing signs to show how they saw the world. They used a sign for hilly or desert lands to describe foreign places. They called their own land Kemet, which means "Black land." They used a different sign for Egypt to show it was a civilized place. This showed they thought other lands were not as ordered as their own. They even used harsh words to describe groups like the Hittites.

Other ancient groups held similar views about themselves and others. The ancient Greeks used the word "barbarians" to describe people who were not Greek. They believed their own culture was better than everyone else. They even thought it was natural for barbarians to be enslaved. The ancient Romans also felt they were superior to other people. Some Roman literature treated Black Africans as if they were very strange. In 42 BC, a soldier named Marcus Junius Brutus met an Ethiopian person. His soldiers attacked the man because they thought his appearance was a bad sign.

History shows many specific examples of these hard challenges in different places. In Mexico, a group of soldiers killed many Chinese and Japanese people in Torreón in 1911. In Panama, people felt their culture was threatened when workers from the Caribbean arrived to build a canal. In Canada, many Muslim and Sikh people faced unfair treatment after the 2001 attacks in the United States. A 2009 poll showed that 45% of Canadians believed Islam encourages violence. In Brazil, people of darker skin are often shown in lower roles on television. These moments show how fear can change how people treat each other.

Modern events can also cause these feelings to grow quickly. When the COVID-19 pandemic began in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, it led to more prejudice. Many people around the world showed racism against those of East Asian descent. In the United States, a 2019 survey found that 76% of Black and Asian people felt discrimination. This includes unfair treatment during traffic stops or in how the media describes people. Even today, many groups continue to work through these difficult social issues. Understanding these patterns helps us see how people have lived together through history.
