An enemy is someone or something seen as a threat. This idea can cause very strong feelings in people. You might feel anger, fear, or even distrust. Sometimes, people feel envy or jealousy toward an enemy. In politics, having an enemy can lead to battles or wars. The opposite of an enemy is a friend or an ally. There is even a special word called a "frenemy." This describes a person who is both a friend and an enemy at once.

Groups often use the idea of an enemy to stay close. When people face a common enemy, they often work together better. However, sometimes people pick enemies in a way that is not fair. This is called demonization, which is a part of propaganda. Propaganda is a way to spread ideas to influence how people think. A government might call a group a "public enemy." This makes that group seem like a threat to everyone.

An enemy does not always have to be a person. Sometimes, an enemy is just a concept or a thing. For example, people can talk about a disease as an enemy. In religion, "the Enemy" might mean an evil spirit or a demon. Early Iroquois legends spoke of a great enemy of man. During the Cold War, many Americans saw "Communists" as the enemy. They often used the word "Reds" to describe them.

Stories in books often use enemies to make things exciting. A main character is called a protagonist. The person who stands in their way is the antagonist. This antagonist acts as a personal enemy to the hero. This creates tension in the story for the reader. Readers want to see if the hero can win. Sometimes, an enemy is a "wolf in sheep's clothing." This means they hide their true self to trick others.
