Prejudice is a feeling toward a person based on the group they belong to. This feeling often happens before a person has any real experience with someone. People might judge others based on many different things. These can include race, religion, age, or gender. They might also judge based on wealth, education, or even music tastes.

Some experts say prejudice is an unreasonable attitude. It can be very hard to change once it starts. This can even become a threat to safety around the world.

Scientists study prejudice to see how it works in the mind. In the 1920s, some researchers used bad studies to claim one race was better than others. This was wrong, but it shaped how people thought for a while. By the 1930s and 1940s, views began to change. People saw the harm caused by the Nazis. A thinker named Theodor Adorno said some people are prejudiced because they have an "authoritarian personality." He said these people are rigid thinkers who see the world in black and white.

In 1954, Gordon Allport wrote a famous book about this topic. He said the human mind must use categories to think and stay organized. This process of making categories is a natural part of being human. Allport also shared an idea called the contact hypothesis. He believed that when different groups spend time together, prejudice can go down. The way people meet matters a lot for this to work. This shows that learning about others is a powerful tool.

Many different theories explain why prejudice happens. Some researchers say it comes from wanting to favor your own group. This is called "ingroup favoritism." Others say it happens when groups compete for things like jobs or food. One study used two summer camps to show this. The camps became hostile after competing for small prizes. However, they worked together better once they had a common goal. Another idea is that people feel threatened by different cultural values. This can include feeling uneasy or anxious around new groups.

Prejudice can have a very real impact on how people feel. It can be a major cause of depression for many people. This can happen to those who are targets of prejudice. It can also happen to people who hold prejudiced views against themselves. Some thinkers, like Paul Bloom, say that categorizing things is necessary for survival. We use categories to make predictions about the world around us. While prejudice can be irrational, the act of categorizing is a natural human way to learn. Understanding these patterns helps us work toward a fairer world.
