Bias is a way of thinking that is one-sided. It happens when someone gives too much weight to an idea or a thing. This can be unfair or even inaccurate. People might have a bias for or against a person or a group. It can also happen with a specific belief. In science, bias is called a systematic error. This means the results are not quite right.

Our minds often make small mistakes when we think. These are called cognitive biases. They are repeating patterns where our judgment goes off track. Some biases happen because our brains have limits. We cannot process all information perfectly every time. Other biases might actually help us make fast choices. For example, speed can sometimes be more important than being perfect.

There are many different kinds of these mental patterns. Anchoring happens when we rely on the very first piece of information we hear. If a car seller names a high price first, that becomes our anchor. Apophenia is when we see meaningful patterns in random data. This includes pareidolia, which is seeing faces in random shapes. You might see a face in the craters of the moon.

Other biases affect how we see ourselves and others. Confirmation bias is like having an internal "yes man." We look for facts that agree with what we already believe. We might ignore facts that prove us wrong. The halo effect happens when one good trait makes us think everything about a person is good. The horn effect is the opposite. If we dislike one thing, we might assume everything else is bad too.

Bias can also show up in how groups act. People sometimes show favoritism toward their own group. This is also called in-group bias. In politics, framing is used to present facts in a certain way. This can influence how people see a problem or a solution. There are also conflicts of interest. This happens when a person has two different interests that might clash. Understanding these patterns helps us see the world more clearly.
