Prejudice is when people form feelings about others too soon. This often happens before they have real experience with a person. People might judge others based on their race, age, or religion. They might also judge based on things like wealth or how someone looks.

In the 1920s, some researchers used bad studies to claim one race was better than others. Later, in the 1930s and 1940s, ideas began to change. People saw how much harm the Nazis caused. A thinker named Theodor Adorno said some people are prejudiced because they are very rigid. They follow strict rules and see the world in black and white.

Gordon Allport studied this in 1954. He said the human mind uses categories to think. He believed that meeting people from different groups can help. This is called the contact hypothesis. Other studies show that prejudice can come from wanting to favor one's own group. It can also happen when groups compete for things like food or jobs.
