life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Our brains use shortcuts to make sense of the world. These shortcuts are called heuristics. They help us make fast choices. Sometimes, these shortcuts lead to mistakes. We call these mistakes cognitive biases.

A bias happens when we rely on the wrong information. This can change how we see reality. For example, some people use the availability heuristic. This means they judge how likely something is by how easy it is to remember. Another type is the anchoring bias. This happens when we rely too much on the first piece of info we hear.

Biases can also come from our own feelings. Some people have a self-serving bias. This is when they take credit for success but blame others for failure. Other biases affect how we see groups of people. We might favor people who are just like us. This is called affinity bias. Some experts say these biases are not always bad. They might be "rules of thumb" that help us act quickly in real life.
