Cognition is the way your mind deals with knowledge. It is a set of steps used to get, store, and use information. This helps you understand the world around you.

One part is perception. This is how your brain makes sense of what you see and hear. It uses light and sound to build a picture of things. Another part is attention. This helps you focus on one thing. It lets you pick out one voice in a noisy room.

Memory is also vital. It helps you keep and find information later. There is working memory. It holds facts for a short time while you use them. There is also long-term memory. This keeps facts for a very long time. Some memories are about your own life. Others are about facts, like knowing that water freezes.

Thinking is another way your mind works. It helps you solve problems and make choices. You can do this on purpose. Or, your mind can do it without you even knowing.

This is called an unconscious process. Scientists study how these mental parts grow as we age.
