When something is sacred, it might inspire deep respect or awe in people. This quality can belong to objects, like a special artifact, or to places, like sacred ground. The word comes from the Latin word "sacer." This old word means something is dedicated or purified for the gods. It is a way to show that something is different from everyday things.

There is a subtle difference between the words "sacred" and "holy." In the Christian tradition, people often use "holy" for people and their relationships. They might use "sacred" for objects, places, or specific events.

Some things, like the Holy Bible, can be both holy and sacred. The word "holy" is often seen as a stronger term. It can imply that something has an essential or natural character. The word "holy" itself comes from an old Germanic word meaning "whole" or "complete."

Many different religions have ways to make things sacred. In Judaism, the Book of Exodus describes how priests and objects are consecrated. This can involve washing, wearing special clothes, or using anointing oils. In Islam, the idea of sanctification is linked to terms like "tazkiah," which relates to purification.

Buddhism uses special rituals called "Buddhābhiseka" to consecrate images of the Buddha. In Jainism, a large ceremony called "Panch Kalyanaka Pratishtha Mahotsava" is held for new idols. These rituals help move things into a special, sacred sphere.

Different groups also have specific timing for these special acts. In Hinduism, many South Indian temples hold a ceremony called "Kumbhabhishekam." This ceremony is done every 12 years to renew or purify the temple.

Doing this is believed to give a good soul a thousand "punya," or good karma. In Mormonism, the idea of consecration is very important. It involves people offering their whole souls to live according to God's will. These traditions show how deeply people value the act of setting things apart.

Some people also find the sacred in the natural world. Many religions from India, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, revere nature. They may treat rivers, trees, mountains, or forests as sacred.

For example, the Ganges is one of the most sacred rivers in Hinduism. In ancient Rome, even the walls of a new city could be made sacred for protection. Scholars like Émile Durkheim have studied how these ideas work in society. They look at how sacred things help bring groups of people together.
