The word comes from an old way of saying "worth-ship." This means giving worth to something. People may worship in groups or all alone. Some do it in a formal way. Others do it in an informal way.

In Buddhism, people use many different ways to show devotion. They might chant or use a tea ceremony. Some people practice meditation. This helps them explore the mind and spirit.

In Christianity, people often gather for church services. Some groups use private prayer to grow closer to God. Some Christians make a distinction between worship for God and honor for saints.

In Islam, worship includes following Islamic law. A big part is praying five times each day. This includes a move called Sujud, which is bowing down.
