The word comes from a Greek term. It means "work for the people." In ancient times, it meant a service for the public. Wealthy people would pay for these services. This helped the city or the state.

Today, liturgy is a way to connect with a divine being. People may use it to show thanks or to ask for help.

In Buddhism, people may chant holy words. They might also offer food, water, or light. This can happen at a temple or at home.

In Islam, prayer is a very important duty. It is called Salat. Most Muslims perform this five times each day. In Judaism, people use a prayer book called a siddur. They pray at different times, like morning and night. Most communal prayers need ten adults to be there.

In Christianity, liturgy often follows a set order of events.
