It is a way to offer prayers to one or more deities. People also use puja to host a special guest or celebrate an event. Some Hindus view the divine as visible within an image. When a person looks at a deity, it is called Darshanam. This is a special moment of connection between a human and the divine.

This interaction is a very important part of many people's spiritual lives.

There are many ways that puja can be performed. Some people do a puja every day in their own homes. Others go to temples for big festivals or special ceremonies. Puja can mark big life events like a wedding or a baby's birth. It is also part of many holidays like Diwali, Holi, and Janmashtami.

During the ritual, people use items like flowers, water, and food. They might light incense sticks or a small lamp called a diya. They may also use a red powder called kumkum on the forehead. If food is offered to a deity, it becomes prasadam. This is food that is shared by everyone as a blessing.

Scholars have different ideas about where puja began. One idea is that it grew from older Vedic rituals. The Grihya Sutras, which are texts from about 500 BC, mention puja. These texts describe using puja to show hospitality to priests. Another idea is that the word has roots in Dravidian languages. Some think the word might mean "making flower sacrifices." The Shiva Purana says the word comes from Sanskrit words meaning achievement and birth. This suggests puja is a way to gain good things like knowledge.

Puja can follow different styles depending on the group or region. In formal Nigama ceremonies, a fire might be lit for the god Agni. These ceremonies may not use an image or an idol. In contrast, Agama ceremonies use an icon or an image of a deity.

People might pray alone or with a priest. A priest is someone who knows many complex hymns and rituals. In places like Bali, Indonesia, puja is very common in homes and temples. In Bali, the practice is sometimes called Sembahyang.

For many, puja is more than just a set of steps. It is a way to transform how a person thinks and feels. Some see it as a form of yoga for the spirit. It can be a path to feel closer to the divine.

Some people use puja to ask for help with things like health. Others use it to find peace or to celebrate the divine in nature. Hindus may see the divine in people, places, or even rivers. This makes the world feel like a very sacred place for them.
