He is a very important figure in the Hindu faith. In many traditions, he is known as the Fire Deity. He is the guardian of the southeast direction. Because of this, you often find him in the southeast corners of Hindu temples.

Agni is also seen as one of the five essential elements. These elements include sky, water, air, and earth. Together, they form the material world we see around us.

Agni works as a special messenger. He acts as the mouth of the gods and goddesses. During a ritual called a homa, people give offerings to the divine. Agni carries these gifts from humans up to the gods.

Ancient texts say he exists in three different places. He is fire on the earth. He is lightning in the atmosphere. He is also the sun in the sky. This triple presence helps him link the heavens to the world below.

Many stories explain how Agni began. Some Vedic texts say the universe started with nothing at all. At that time, only the god Prajāpati existed. Agni is said to have come from the forehead of Prajāpati. This brought light to the universe and created day and night.

Other myths describe him as a heavenly falcon. This bird brings fire and immortality from the gods to people. In some stories, Agni is part of a group of three brothers. His brothers are Indra, the god of storms, and Sūrya, the sun god.

Agni has many different names and roles. In the Rigveda, there are over 200 hymns that praise him. His name appears in nearly one-third of the 1,028 hymns in that book. He is called Pāvaka, which means he sanctifies everything. He is also called Saptajihvi because he has seven tongues of flame.

Some people even call him the colorful light producer, Chitrabhānu. These many names show how much people respect his power.

Agni is still a big part of life today. He is a central witness in Hindu weddings. During the Saptapadi ritual, a couple takes seven steps and makes vows.

He is also part of the Upanayana ceremony. People use lamps called diyā during festivals like Deepavali. These small lights represent his energy. Even in other traditions like Buddhism and Jainism, the idea of fire is very important. Agni represents the energy that transforms and brings knowledge.
