An avatar is a very special idea in Hinduism. The word comes from a Sanskrit term that means to descend or come down. This describes a divine being or spirit coming from eternity into our world.

It is like a god taking a physical form on Earth. This can happen in a human form or even an animal form. Some people use the word to show respect for great humans. They might call a wise teacher an avatar because of their amazing ideas. This concept helps people connect with the divine through shapes they can see.

Most people associate the idea of an avatar with the god Vishnu. Vishnu is known as the preserver or the sustainer in the Hindu Trinity. He is believed to appear whenever the cosmos faces a big crisis. This usually happens when evil grows too strong and breaks the cosmic balance.

The avatar's job is to destroy evil and restore a sense of righteousness. This holy balance and duty is called dharma. By appearing in the material world, these beings help bring dharma back to the people.

History shows that the word avatar was not used in the oldest Vedic literature. Instead, the noun form appeared in later Puranic literature after the 6th century CE. Earlier texts like the Rigveda describe gods having the power to take many forms. The Bhagavad Gita also explains these ideas using different words.

There are many different lists of these divine appearances in holy scriptures. The Garuda Purana lists ten major avatars, which are called the Dashavatara. The Bhagavata Purana lists twenty-two, and even says these incarnations are innumerable.

These avatars take many wonderful and different shapes. Matsya is a fish that saves people from a cosmic flood. Kurma is a tortoise that supports a mountain during a great task. Varaha is a boar who rescues the goddess of the earth. Narasimha is a man with a lion head who saves a devotee.

Other famous names include Rama, the ideal king, and Krishna, the divine teacher. There is even a prophesied future avatar named Kalki who will end an age of corruption.

While the term started in Hinduism, similar ideas exist in other faiths. Some people call these appearances incarnations. Christian theologians sometimes compare the two ideas but see important differences. In Hinduism, avatars are often seen as perfect spiritual embodiments. Other religions like Buddhism also have concepts that are similar to the avatar. Even the word has moved into English as a loanword used in many different ways today.
