Vishnu is one of the most important gods in Hinduism.

He is known as the Preserver within the Trimurti. This is a group of three supreme gods that includes Brahma and Shiva. Many people follow a tradition called Vaishnavism. In this faith, Vishnu is the supreme Lord. He is believed to create, protect, and transform the entire universe.

He is often seen with his partner, Lakshmi, who is his equal and complementary power.

There are many ways to understand how Vishnu works. Some people see him as a being with specific qualities. Others believe he is the limitless and unchanging absolute Brahman. He is also described as the primal Atman, or the Self, of the universe.

One peaceful image shows him sleeping on the coils of a serpent named Shesha. He floats on a vast ocean of milk called Kshira Sagara. This serpent represents time itself.

Vishnu has a long history in Indian traditions. In the early Rigveda, he was a solar deity. He was not the main figure in those very old hymns. However, he rose to great importance during the mid-first millennium BCE.

Over time, he was joined with other local gods and traditions. This included figures like Vāsudeva-Krishna and Narayana. These connections helped him become a divinity of the highest rank.

One of the most famous parts of Vishnu is his avatars. An avatar is an incarnation where the god descends to Earth. He does this to protect dharma and restore order when evil threatens the world.

The Dashavatara is a list of his ten primary avatars. Rama and Krishna are two of the most important ones. Other avatars include Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parasurama, Buddha, and Kalki. Different ancient books, called Puranas, sometimes list different numbers of avatars.

People use many names to describe Vishnu. The name Vishnu means "all pervasive." This suggests he is inside everything. Some ancient texts like the Mahabharata list over 1,000 names for him. Each name describes a different quality or aspect of the god.

These names help followers understand his many different roles. Whether he is seen as benevolent or fearsome, he remains a central figure in many lives.
