Vishnu is one of the principal deities within Hinduism.

He is recognized as the Preserver within the Trimurti. The Trimurti is a triple deity of supreme divinity that includes Brahma and Shiva. In the major tradition known as Vaishnavism, Vishnu is viewed as the supreme Lord. He is believed to create, protect, and transform the entire universe.

Within this system, the goddess Lakshmi serves as his equal and complementary partner. She represents the Shakti, or the creative power and energy of the deity.

Followers of Vaishnavism hold specific views regarding the nature of the divine. They believe the supreme being possesses qualities, a concept known as Saguna. In this state, the deity has a definite form. However, Vishnu is also understood to be the limitless, transcendent, and unchanging absolute Brahman. He is also considered the primal Atman, which is the Self of the universe. This means he is both a personal god and the underlying reality of all existence.

Depictions of Vishnu can vary between benevolent and fearsome aspects. In his benevolent form, he is often shown as an omniscient being. He is frequently pictured sleeping on the coils of the serpent Shesha. This serpent represents the concept of time. He floats upon a primeval ocean of milk called the Kshira Sagara. This imagery suggests a state of cosmic peace and eternal presence.

Vishnu has a complex history of development within Indian religious texts. In the Rigveda, he was a solar deity. However, he was not a prominent figure in those early hymns. Only 5 out of 1028 hymns in the Rigveda are dedicated to him. Scholars note that he may have been more important to the masses than the texts suggest. He rose to much greater prominence during the mid-first millennium BCE.

During the last centuries BCE and early centuries CE, he was syncretized with local traditions. This process joined him with deities like Vāsudeva-Krishna and Narayana.

A central mechanism of Vishnu's role is the concept of the avatar. An avatar is an incarnation where the deity descends to Earth. Vishnu does this to restore cosmic order and protect dharma. He acts when the world is threatened by evil, chaos, or destruction.

The Dashavatara refers to his ten primary avatars. Among these, Rama and Krishna are considered the most important. Other primary avatars include Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parasurama, Buddha, and Kalki. Because different Puranas provide different lists, the total number of avatars is not always fixed.

There are many names used to describe the attributes of Vishnu. The name Vishnu itself means "all pervasive." This suggests he is inside everything and is everything. The scholar Yaska defined him as one who enters everywhere. In the Mahabharata, the "Anushasana Parva" lists over 1,000 names for him. These names are part of the Vishnu Sahasranama. Each name describes a specific quality, attribute, or aspect of the divine.

Vishnu's influence extends across different regions and traditions. In South India, he is also known as Perumal, Thirumal, or Mayon. Tamil Sangam literature describes Mayon as a supreme deity. This deity is associated with the pastoral landscape known as the mullai tiṇai. These various identities show how Vishnu became a divinity of the highest rank. His role as the sustainer connects him to the very balance of the cosmos.
