Brahma is a major god in the Hindu religion. He is known as the Creator of all things. He is part of a special group called the Trimurti. This group is a trinity of supreme divinity. It includes Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Each god has a very important job to do. Brahma is linked to the creation of the universe. He is also tied to knowledge and the Vedas. The Vedas are ancient and holy books.

Brahma has a very distinct way of being shown. He is often seen as a man with a golden complexion. He has a beard and usually has four heads. These four heads point toward the four cardinal directions. His four heads also represent the four Vedas. He is often shown sitting on a lotus flower. His mount, or vahana, is a hamsa. A hamsa can be a swan, a goose, or a crane.

Many old stories explain how Brahma began his existence. One legend from the Puranas says he created himself. He did this inside a golden embryo called the Hiranyagarbha. This egg emerged from an eternal ocean. Another story says he was born from a lotus. This lotus grew from the navel of the god Vishnu. Some texts say he was born from Shiva instead. These stories help explain how the world started.

Brahma was once a very prominent deity. Between the 2nd and 6th centuries CE, his followers had their own sect. However, he lost much of his significance by the 7th century. Some believe he was overshadowed by Vishnu and Shiva. Other stories say he was demoted to a secondary role. One legend says Shiva cut off one of Brahma's heads. This happened because Brahma told a lie during a debate. Because of this, he lost his large following.

In modern times, Brahma is not worshipped as much as others. There are very few temples dedicated to him in India. The most famous one is the Brahma Temple in Pushkar, Rajasthan.

You can also find his shrines in other places. For example, the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok is very popular. This shrine is visited by the Thai Buddhist community. Even though he is less common now, he remains a key part of Hindu history. He helps explain the cycle of the universe.
