Some thinkers call her "shakti," which means divine energy. This energy is the creative force that keeps the whole universe going. Without her power, Shiva is considered incomplete. She balances his quiet nature with her life-giving energy. This helps keep the world in a steady balance.

Her history is filled with many different stories. Parvati is seen as the reincarnation of a goddess named Sati. Sati was the first wife of Shiva. Parvati was born to the mountain lord Himavan and his wife Mena.

Her birth was seen as a huge event for the cosmos. Her name actually means "she of the mountain." This is because her father is the king of the mountains. Some stories say her presence helped bring Shiva back to family life.

Because she is so important, Parvati has hundreds of different names.

Some names, like Uma, are used in very old books. Another name is Gauri, which means "the golden one." This name is often used when she is seen as calm and kind. However, she also has a fierce side. She can appear as the goddess Kali to destroy evil and protect people. Some people even see her as the supreme deity, Mahadevi.

Artists show Parvati in many different ways in temples.

She is often shown wearing a red sari. In statues, she might have two arms or even four arms. Her hands often make special signs called mudras. One sign is the "Abhaya mudra," which tells people not to be afraid. Another sign is the "Varada mudra," which means she grants wishes. You can find her beautiful statues in many places across South Asia and Southeast Asia.
