Her name means "impassable" or "invincible." This tells us she is someone who cannot be easily defeated. Many people worship her in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

She is often seen as a motherly figure and a strong warrior. People look to her for protection and strength. She represents the power of good over evil forces. This makes her a very central figure in many traditions.

Durga is often shown in a very specific way. She is usually depicted as a warrior riding a lion or a tiger.

She is often shown with many arms. Each arm carries a different weapon to help her fight. These weapons allow her to defeat many demons at once. In some stories, she even brings other goddesses like Kali to help her. She uses this power to protect peace and cosmic order. This imagery shows her role as a powerful protector.

Historians believe Durga has very ancient roots. She may have started as a goddess worshipped by people living in the mountains.

By the 4th century CE, she was part of the main Hindu pantheon. Her name appears in very old texts like the Rigveda. These ancient hymns speak of a divine feminine power. Some scholars even find similar images in the Indus Valley civilization. This shows that people have honored her for a very long time.

One of the most famous stories is about the demon Mahishasura.

Mahishasura was a half-buffalo demon who wanted to be immortal. He asked the god Brahma for a special gift. He asked that only a woman could kill him. He thought women were too weak to pose a threat. To stop him, the gods combined their energy to create Durga. She fought the demon in many forms. Finally, she used her trident to defeat him.

Durga connects to many different parts of Hindu life. In some traditions, she is seen as the wife of Shiva.

Many of these celebrations happen after the spring and autumn harvests. These festivals bring people together to honor her strength and grace.
