In this faith, the divine feminine energy is called Shakti. Shaktas believe Shakti is the ultimate reality of all existence. She is the source and the energy of the whole cosmos. Everything in the universe comes from her and eventually returns to her. This belief makes the goddess the most important part of their spiritual life. Followers often choose a personal goddess to worship, which is called an ishta-devi.

This choice can depend on a person's family or where they live.

The goddess appears in many different forms with unique roles.

Durga is a famous goddess who fights evil to keep order. Parvati is seen as a gentle and powerful mother goddess. Kali represents a primal force of time and change. Other goddesses include Saraswati for knowledge and Lakshmi for wealth. Some groups worship the Mahavidya, which are ten fierce goddesses. There are also the Sapta-Matrika, or Seven Mothers, who help the goddess in battles.

Archaeologists found an early shrine at a site called Baghor I. This site in Madhya Pradesh dates back to between 9000 BC and 8000 BC. Some people think Shakti worship might also come from the Indus Valley Civilisation. Ancient texts like the Rig Veda mention various goddesses very early on. By the third or fourth century, the goddess became very prominent. The Devi Mahatmya is a vital text that helped shape these ideas. It is considered as important as the Bhagavad Gita.

There are many special books that Shaktas use to learn.

These include the Shakta Upanishads and the Devi-Bhagavata Purana. The Devi Gita is another important book that explains their ideas. It describes the goddess as a cosmic energy living inside everyone. This book is a philosophical guide, much like the Bhagavad Gita. Another text, the Tripura Upanishad, introduces the ways of Shakta Tantra. These scriptures help followers understand the connection between their souls and the divine.

Shaktism is a large and influential part of the world.

In 2020, experts estimated there are about 305 million Shaktas. This makes Shaktism the third-largest Hindu denomination. It has also influenced other groups like Vaishnavism and Shaivism. Some art shows the divine as both male and female. This is seen in the figure of Ardhanari, who is half-Shiva and half-Shakti. This helps show that the divine includes all aspects of life. Festivals like Durga Puja are very popular, especially in eastern India.
