Hindu temples are more than just buildings. They are sacred places built to create a link between humans and the divine. These spaces help people progress toward spiritual truth and liberation, known as moksha.

A temple can feel like a whole world. It brings together many elements like fire, water, and nature. It even includes the smells of incense and the sounds of prayer. Architects follow special rules from ancient texts called the Shilpa Shastras and Vastu Sastras to build them.

Every temple has a very important center. This is the garbha griha, or womb-chamber. It is a simple, bare room that houses a holy image called a Murti.

Above this chamber, a tall tower rises toward the sky. In northern styles, this tower is called a shikhara. In southern styles, it is called a vimana. Many temples also have a mandapa, which is a large hall for people to gather. Some temples include an antarala, which is a small room between the main hall and the inner chamber.

Temple building has a very long history in India. Some of the earliest known structures were elliptical shrines. These were found in places like Besnagar and Nagari. These old temples date back to the 3rd or 2nd century BCE.

Archaeologists found that these early temples used burnt bricks and wooden pillars. They even found iron nails used to hold the wood together. While many of these early wooden buildings did not last, they helped set the stage for stone temples. By the 5th century CE, during the Gupta dynasty, stone temples became more common.

Over many centuries, different styles grew in different regions. In the south, the Pallava dynasty built amazing temples at Mahabalipuram between the 7th and 8th centuries. Some were even carved directly out of natural rock.

In the Deccan region, the Badami Chalukyas built temples that mixed northern and southern styles. This created a unique style called Vesara. The Rashtrakuta kings also left their mark, such as when Krishna I built the Kailasanatha temple at Ellora.

Later, the Vijayanagara Empire added very tall gateways called gopurams to many large temples.

These architectural ideas traveled far beyond India. Hindu temple styles influenced the way Buddhist architecture was made. For example, the shikhara tower may have influenced the design of the pagoda. You can see these styles in many places like Thailand, China, and Japan.

Even in Southeast Asia, very old Hindu temples were built using granite and bricks. Some of these sites, like Oc Eo in the Mekong Delta, date back to the 2nd century BCE. This shows how much people valued these beautiful and sacred designs across the world.
