These events happen when the main crops of a region are ready. Because climates and crops change, these festivals happen at different times worldwide. People often enjoy big feasts with food grown from their farms. It is a time for togetherness and showing gratitude for the food. Many cultures use these moments to feel proud of their hard work.

There are many ways people celebrate. In British churches, people decorate with baskets of fruit and food. They might bring produce from a garden or a farm. Often, this food is given to the poor or senior citizens. In Ethiopia, the Oromo people celebrate Irreecha to mark the end of the rainy season. Jewish people celebrate Sukkot by building a temporary hut called a sukkah. They spend a week eating and sleeping inside it to remember the past.

History shows us many old traditions. In Britain, an early festival called Lammas was held on 1 August. Farmers made bread from fresh wheat for special church services. By the 1500s, many customs were already well known. Some reapers would dress up and act as the 'lord' of the harvest. They would even ask the crowd for money. A play by Thomas Nashe in 1600 shows these lively scenes. It even includes a character named Harvest who carries a scythe.

Specific details make these festivals unique. In 1621, the Pilgrims held a famous harvest Thanksgiving in North America. In 1843, Reverend Robert Hawker started a new harvest tradition in Cornwall. Later, in 1854, Dr. William Beal promoted 'harvest homes' in Norfolk. In India, many festivals happen at different times, like Lohri in January. In Iran, the festival of Mehrgan was once celebrated at Persepolis. During that time, people brought gifts for the king.

These celebrations connect us to the land and each other. In the past, farmers had a big meal called a harvest supper. Some called it a 'Mell-supper' because it followed the last patch of corn. People even raced to be the first to finish the harvest. Some workers would throw sickles at the last corn to cut it down. Today, many people use harvest time to think about others. They show concern for people in the developing world who struggle to grow food.
