An altar is a special table or platform used for religious purposes. People use them to present offerings or to perform rituals. You can find altars in many different places of worship. These include temples, shrines, and churches.

Many different belief systems use them today, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity. Even modern paganism uses altars for their practices. In the past, people in the Greek, Roman, and Norse religions used them too.

The word itself comes from Latin and likely relates to the idea of a burning place.

In ancient times, altars were used for making sacrifices to gods. This could include animal sacrifices or pouring out liquid offerings.

In Ancient Rome, people often carved names onto altars. They would write the name of the person giving the gift and the god it was for. One famous example is the Ara Pacis. This altar was dedicated by Augustus Caesar to the goddess of peace, Pax. In the Hebrew Bible, altars were often made of earth or rough stone.

They were usually built in places where everyone could see them.

Christianity gives the altar a very central role in worship. In Catholic and Orthodox traditions, the altar is the table used for the Eucharist. This is a special ceremony involving bread and wine.

Because it is so important, the area around the altar is often seen as extra holy. Some churches use screens or rails to mark this space. Most churches have one main altar, but some larger ones have side chapels with their own altars. In some Protestant churches, a table called a Communion table is used instead.

Altars can be built in different ways depending on the tradition. Some are attached to a wall, while others are free-standing.

Free-standing altars allow people to walk all the way around them. In the early days of the Church, some people even used portable altars. Some historians believe that during hard times, Christians used stone tombs as altars. This might be why many churches today place relics of saints beneath their altars.

Today, the Roman Catholic Church says it is desirable to have a fixed altar made of stone.

Altars are not always found in large buildings. Some people have personal altars in their own homes.

These might be kept in a bedroom or a small closet. They are used for private prayer and personal devotion. You can also find altars used outdoors in nature or in cemeteries. Whether they are huge stone structures or small wooden tables, altars help people connect with their faith. They serve as a physical place for deep thoughts and sacred traditions.
