Animal sacrifice is a religious ritual where an animal is killed and offered to a deity. People perform these acts to show respect or to gain favor from a god.

This practice was very common in Europe and the Ancient Near East for a long time. It continued until the spread of Christianity in Late Antiquity. Some cultures still practice versions of this today. It is different from the normal way people slaughter animals for food. In a sacrifice, the animal is usually the best one available.

The way a sacrifice works depends on the specific culture. Some groups, like the Ancient Greeks, ate most of the meat in a big feast. They would burn the bones and other parts for the god. Other cultures practiced a holocaust, where the entire animal was burned on an altar.

In Ancient Rome, the animal had to seem willing to be sacrificed. It had to stay calm and be killed quickly and cleanly. The Romans also used different colors for different gods. They gave white animals to gods of the sky. They gave dark animals to gods of the earth or the dead.

History shows that these rituals have been around for thousands of years. In Ancient Egypt, some of the earliest evidence comes from the Badari culture. This culture lived in Upper Egypt between 4400 and 4000 BCE.

At sites like Hierakonpolis, archaeologists found many different animals buried there. These included animals like baboons and hippopotami. In Europe, the Monte d'Accoddi in Sardinia is a very old sacred center. Excavations there show that sheep, cattle, and pigs were sacrificed long ago. In Spain, a young goat was found in a cave from the Middle Neolithic period.

Different animals were chosen for different reasons and gods. The Greeks preferred bulls, oxen, or cows. Sheep were the most common animal used in their rituals. They also used goats, pigs, and sometimes poultry.

Some gods even had specific animals, like doves for Aphrodite. The Scythians had different rules for their offerings. They thought the horse was the most prestigious animal to sacrifice. However, they did not offer pigs at all. In Rome, officials used specific animals for important events. For example, they used a white heifer for the goddess Juno.

These ancient traditions help us understand how people viewed the world. For many, sacrifice was a way to build a bond with the divine. In the Greek stories of Homer, sacrifices happen during banquets or times of danger.

These stories show that gods were often seen as part of society. Later, during the Hellenistic period, some philosophers began to question if these rituals were right. Even though many of these old ways have changed, the history of sacrifice tells a story of how humans have sought connection with the sacred for ages.
