Prehistoric religion covers the many beliefs held by people before written records existed. This era is called prehistory, and it makes up most of human history. Over 99% of our time on Earth happened during the Paleolithic period. Because these people did not write books, studying them is a hard job. Scientists must look at old objects to guess what people believed. They use clues from art and tools to find answers.

Many thinkers believe early religion was shamanic in nature. A shaman is a special leader who might enter a trance state. A trance is a deep, dream-like feeling used to find secret knowledge. We see clues for this in beautiful cave art. We also see them in small statues called Venus figurines. These objects suggest people had a very deep connection to the spirit world.

Long ago, our relatives like the Neanderthals may have had rituals too. Some evidence shows they buried their dead about 150,000 years ago. They might have used feathers or claws to decorate their bodies. Some scholars think they even practiced bear worship. They found many bear bones near Neanderthal homes. However, other experts think this was just a coincidence because bears live in caves.

Around 12,000 BC, a big change called the Neolithic Revolution happened. People began to farm instead of just hunting. This change made societies more organized and hierarchical. Their religious practices likely changed to match this new way of life. They may have started ancestor worship to honor their families. Some groups even built huge stone circles like Stonehenge.

As time went on, religions became more complex and structured. The Proto-Indo-Europeans had their own mythology and language. By the Bronze and Iron Ages, some people even began to write things down. This makes it easier for us to learn about their gods and stories. Today, some people study these old ways to create new traditions. We are still discovering how the human mind first began to wonder about the world.
