These beings represent the growth cycle of plants. They show how life can disappear and then reappear. This cycle is often called life, death, and rebirth. Many people believe these gods have the power to regenerate. This means they can grow back or start again. Such gods are often linked to fertility.

In many myths, these gods go through a specific pattern. They may be scattered or broken into pieces. This is sometimes called dismemberment. Later, the pieces are brought back together. This process is called reintegration. These stories help people understand big ideas. They think about immortality and living again. Some myths also show how parts of a body create the world. This is similar to the Norse myth of Ymir.

In Mesopotamia, people told stories about Inanna and Dumuzi. Inanna was a goddess who traveled to the underworld. When she went there, the earth became sterile. This means nothing could grow or be born. After she faced Ereshkigal, Inanna was killed. An emissary gave her potions to bring her back to life. Her husband, Dumuzi, agreed to stay in the underworld for half the year. During his time away, the plants die off. When he returns, the vegetation grows again.

Ancient Egypt had a different story about Osiris. Osiris was a god with many great achievements. His brother, Set, became envious and killed him. Set also dismembered Osiris into many pieces. Osiris's wife, Isis, went on a journey to find him. She searched for his fourteen scattered body parts. In some versions, she buried each part where she found it. This caused plants to grow in the desert. In other versions, she reassembled him. Then, Osiris became the ruler of the afterlife.

We can also see these ideas in old art and folklore. The Cucuteni-Trypillian culture made special figurines. These figures have a pattern of dots and lines. This pattern represents a sown field. It may also show female fertility. In European folklore, people believed a woman's fertility affected farming. Other myths also link plant death to the underworld. For example, the travels of Ningishzida are related to this. These many stories show how people wonder about nature.
