Venus figurines are tiny statues of women from the very distant past.

These objects are some of the earliest examples of art ever made. Most are small enough to be held in a hand. They are called "Venus" figurines because of the Roman goddess of beauty. However, there is no real link between these old statues and that goddess.

Archaeologists study them to learn about prehistoric life. They are a type of portable art that people carried with them.

Artists used many different ways to create these small figures. They carved them from soft stone like limestone or calcite. Some were made from bone or ivory from animals.

Other people shaped them out of clay and then fired them. These clay figures are among the oldest ceramics in history. Some statues even show traces of red ochre, which is a natural red pigment.

This color might have been used for special religious reasons.

Finding these statues helps us trace a very long history. The Venus of Hohle Fels is a very famous example. It was carved from a mammoth tusk at least 35,000 years ago. This makes it one of the oldest known sculptures.

In 1864, Paul Hurault found a figurine in France called the Vénus impudique. Later, in 1908, the famous Venus of Willendorf was found in Austria. These discoveries have happened in many places, from the Pyrenees Mountains to Siberia.

Most figurines share very specific physical details. They often have wide hips and large breasts or stomachs. Many of them do not have arms, feet, or even faces.

The heads are usually quite small. Some statues show detailed hairstyles or even tattoos. Some scholars think these shapes might show how women looked at themselves. Since they had no mirrors, they might have used puddles of water instead. Others think the shapes represent health or success during cold times.

We still do not know the exact reason people made them. The original meaning of these objects is a great mystery. Some people believe they represent a "Mother Goddess" or a creator.

Others think they were used in special rituals or for childbirth. Some scientists think the different body shapes show how people adapted to climate change. Even though we cannot be sure, these figurines remain a vital link to our ancestors. They show us how humans have expressed themselves through art for thousands of years.
