These paintings are a type of art called parietal art. Scientists study them to understand how early humans thought and felt. Artists used many different ways to make their art. They could use their fingers to trace lines or model shapes in clay. Some people made engravings by scratching into the rock. Others made hand stencils by tracing their hands. They used colors like red and yellow from minerals called ochre. They also used manganese oxide and black charcoal.

Sometimes they even carved the shape of an animal into the stone first.

Finding the age of these paintings is a big job for scientists. It used to be hard because dirt can mix with the art. Now, new technology helps us date the actual pigment used. We can also look at marks from old torches on the walls. Scientists even study the mineral layers that grow on top of the art.

Some of these paintings are incredibly old. The oldest known painting is on Muna Island and is 67,800 years old. In Indonesia, scientists found paintings of people hunting pigs that are 51,200 years old. These might be the first examples of storytelling in history. In Europe, the Cave of El Castillo in Spain has art from 40,000 BC.

Some of the earliest art in Spain was likely made by Neanderthals.

The subjects of the art change depending on when they were made. Many paintings show large animals like bison, horses, and deer. These animals were important for survival and hunting. In some places, like the caves in France, artists drew rhinos. Over a long time, the style of art changed too. It went from detailed animals to simple shapes and abstract marks.
