Cave paintings are a form of parietal art, which means art found on the walls or ceilings of caves.

This ancient art includes paintings, engravings, and hand stencils. Scientists study these works to understand the history of Homo sapiens. These paintings offer a window into early human thought and creativity. They may represent the first signs of spirituality or sentimental thinking. By examining these marks, we learn how humans developed abstract ideas.

Artists used several specific techniques to create these images. Some used finger flutings, which are abstract patterns made by tracing fingers in soft surfaces. Others used engravings, or scratching designs into the rock. Some artists created bas-relief sculptures by modeling clay. Hand stencils were also common, where a hand was placed against the wall and color was applied around it. For colors, artists used pigments like red and yellow ochre. They also used manganese oxide and black charcoal.

Determining the age of cave art is a complex scientific process. In the past, radiocarbon dating was sometimes misleading due to contamination from debris. Modern technology has improved this accuracy significantly. Scientists can now sample the actual pigment used in the art. They also date torch marks left on the cave walls. Another method involves dating carbonate deposits that form on top of the paintings. These mineral layers act like a timer for the artwork underneath.

Recent discoveries have changed our understanding of who made the oldest art. For a long time, it was believed that modern humans created all prehistoric art. However, some evidence suggests Neanderthals were also artists. In Spain, red non-figurative symbols were found in the Maltravieso, Ardales, and La Pasiega caves. These are at least 64,800 years old. This predates the arrival of modern humans in Europe by 20,000 years. This suggests Neanderthals were responsible for these early marks.

Global discoveries show that art appeared at many different times and places. The oldest known cave painting is on Muna Island, dated at 67,800 years old. In Indonesia, the Maros-Pangkep karst region contains very old art. One painting of people hunting pigs is approximately 51,200 years old. This is considered the oldest known example of storytelling. In Borneo, a painting of an unknown bovine is at least 40,000 years old. Other sites, like the Cave of El Castillo in Spain, show art from 40,000 BC.

Subject matter often changed based on the environment and the era. Many paintings focus on large wild animals like bison, horses, and deer. Artists often showed great accuracy in depicting the walking gait of four-legged animals. This suggests they observed their prey very closely for survival. In some regions, like the Iberian Mediterranean Basin, the style changed. These later works, from 10,000 to 5,500 years ago, used smaller figures. They often featured large groups of humans and animals in rock shelters.

Over many thousands of years, the style of cave art evolved. It often moved from naturalistic animal drawings toward simpler forms. Eventually, art transitioned into abstract shapes and signs. This progression shows how human expression changed over time. Some caves were used repeatedly for thousands of years. This long history connects art to climate and changing lifestyles. The study of these paintings links archaeology, biology, and art history together.
