Paleolithic religion refers to the spiritual beliefs and practices of early humans. Researchers study these behaviors to understand how ancient people viewed the world. These beliefs are theorized to have emerged during the Paleolithic time period. Many scientists link these behaviors to the concept of behavioral modernity. This term describes a set of complex social and cognitive traits. These traits include symbolic thought and advanced social structures. While we cannot know exactly what they believed, we can study their actions.

Scientists use several theories to explain when these behaviors first appeared. One theory suggests a cultural revolution occurred 40,000 years ago. This coincided with the arrival of modern humans in Europe. A second theory proposes that behavioral modernity developed gradually. This process might have begun during the Middle Stone Age. A third theory suggests these traits were not unique to Homo sapiens. Instead, they may have arisen among different human types, including Neanderthals. These different models help researchers map the evolution of the human mind.

Archaeologists look for specific evidence to identify religious behavior. They focus on burial rites, which mark the boundary between life and death. They also look for the use of pigments like red ochre. The use of pigments often serves no material or survival purpose. This suggests it might have been used for symbolic reasons. Researchers also study portable art and cave art. Cave art includes paintings, engravings, and reliefs on stone walls. Portable art consists of smaller objects like figurines. These items provide clues about the symbolic lives of early people.

History shows that these behaviors evolved through different stages. The Lower Paleolithic is often considered a time before clear religious practice. Some researchers look at very early fossils for clues. For example, Paul Pettitt suggests AL 333 fossils from Ethiopia might show mortuary practices. During the Middle Paleolithic, we see more evidence of symbolic activity. This includes the use of pigments and more complex burials. The Upper Paleolithic, beginning about 40,000 years ago, shows fully developed symbolic behavior. This era is famous for its sophisticated cave paintings and sculpture.

There are many specific types of practices that researchers have identified. One possibility is the existence of a skull cult. This involved the veneration of human or animal skulls. Some people may have kept skulls to stay connected to ancestors. Another idea is the bear cult. Scientists found many cave bear skulls placed in prominent cave niches. This led to theories that these animals were worshipped. We also see evidence of ritual cannibalism in some sites. At Krapina, researchers found mixed animal and human remains. This practice might have been used to honor the deceased.

Notable examples of early symbolic objects include the Venus figurines. These are carved statues of women that may represent deities or fertility. The Venus of Berekhat Ram is a highly speculative example. It is a stone object dated to between 300,000 and 350,000 years ago. Another famous example is the cave art found in Chauvet Cave. These paintings depict animals like horses with great detail.

The oldest known cave art was actually found in Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is dated to 45,500 years ago and shows a warty pig.

These ancient practices connect to broader themes in human evolution. The ability to use symbols is a major hallmark of modern humans. It shows an advance in cognitive capacity and complex thought. The shift toward ritual behavior also relates to social bonding. As early humans worked in larger groups, they developed a collaborative identity. This social structure likely supported the growth of shared beliefs. Studying these early patterns helps us understand the roots of human culture.
