A demon is defined as a malevolent or evil supernatural entity.

These beings appear in many forms across folklore, mythology, religion, and literature. Today, they remain prevalent in modern media like films, video games, and comics. From an anthropological perspective, these concepts often arise from human fear of the unknown.

When people encounter strange or horrific events, they may project those fears onto invisible entities. This process can turn unknown causes of death or illness into rational, intentional agents. Similarly, people outside a social group might be demonized to explain accidents or harm. This integrates the perceived cause of evil into a community's existing belief system.

The mechanism of how demons interact with the world varies by tradition. In some theological frameworks, demons act as minions of the Devil. They serve as lesser spirits tasked with causing humans to have sinful thoughts. These entities may also tempt people to commit sinful actions. In other traditions, demons operate independently rather than as servants. They may cause specific types of evil, such as destructive natural phenomena or particular diseases. This distinction separates the role of a demon from a devil, who often represents a direct opposition to the Divine principle.

Different cultures have developed distinct categories for these spirits. Ancient Egyptian belief divided them into "guardians" and "wanderers."

Guardians were tied to specific locations, such as sacred places or the gates to the netherworld. Their role was often protective rather than purely evil. For example, they might prevent souls from entering paradise unless the correct charms were used. In contrast, "wanderers" were associated with chaos, plagues, and mental illness. Some wanderers served as executioners for major deities like Ra or Osiris. A sub-category included nightmare demons, which were believed to enter the human body to cause bad dreams.

Mesopotamian demonology offers another complex system of classification.

In the Babylonian creation epic, the Enūma Eliš, demons were the children of Tiamat, the goddess of primordial chaos. Tiamat created them as an act of revenge after the gods killed her partner, Abzu. Some Mesopotamian demons were the spirits of those who died in misery. Others were nature demons that caused storms, headaches, or plagues. One specific class, the galla, resided in the underworld. These beings were believed to ascend to terrorize mortals or drag the unfortunate back to Kur. Some texts suggest there were seven such galla demons.

The history of the term "demon" reveals a significant shift in meaning. The original Ancient Greek word, *daimon*, did not carry negative connotations. It denoted a spirit or a divine power. The philosopher Plato used the term to describe the divine inspiration of Socrates. However, the meaning changed through the Septuagint, which translated the Hebrew Bible into Greek. This translation drew on Semitic mythology and introduced negative meanings. By the early Roman Empire, Christians viewed old pagan statues as being infested with these malevolent spirits. By approximately 825, the English language used "demon" as a synonym for devils.

Zoroastrianism played a crucial role in shaping later religious views. The founder, Zoroaster, elevated Ahura Mazda to the supreme God. This change relegated the *daevas*, or spirits, to the status of demons. Zoroastrianism emphasized free will, teaching that demons became evil by choosing falsehood over truth. This belief system had a profound influence on the development of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic demonology. During the Persian era, these ideas were transferred to Judaism, which later influenced Christianity and Islam. This historical chain shows how spiritual concepts travel and evolve across different civilizations.

In modern contexts, the concept of the demon continues to evolve. While many religions and occult traditions still hold literal beliefs in them, the term is also used metaphorically. In contemporary Western esoteric traditions, "inner demons" serve as a metaphor for difficult psychological processes.

This allows the concept to connect ancient supernatural fears with modern understandings of the human mind. Whether viewed as literal entities or psychological symbols, demons remain a powerful way for humans to categorize and discuss the presence of evil and suffering.
