Some researchers believe these behaviors appeared during the Upper Paleolithic. They think this happened before 30,000 years ago. Other scientists see signs of religious behavior much earlier. They look at burial rites from the Middle Paleolithic. These rites might date back 300,000 years. These early actions involve species like Neanderthals and possibly Homo naledi.

How these beliefs started is still a big mystery. One theory says a cultural revolution happened 40,000 years ago. This idea links new behaviors to modern humans arriving in Europe. Another idea says these changes happened slowly over a long time. Some thinkers believe these traits were not just for Homo sapiens. They suggest Neanderthals might have shared these special behaviors too.

Burials and special objects provide many important clues. Burials are the clearest signs of spiritual life. They show the boundary between the living and the dead.

Some scientists also study the idea of a skull cult. This is when people honored ancestors by keeping skulls. There is also a theory about a bear cult. This idea comes from finding many bear skulls in caves. Some people think these were placed in special spots for worship. These findings help us understand how early groups lived together.

As time went on, art became much more common. The Upper Paleolithic period brought amazing cave paintings.
