The Middle Paleolithic was a major part of the Old Stone Age. It is the second stage of this long era. This time lasted from about 300,000 to 50,000 years ago. In Africa, people often call this the Middle Stone Age.

It was a time of great change for early humans. During this period, modern humans began to move out of Africa. They moved into new lands around 125,000 years ago. They began to live alongside other species like the Neanderthals.

People during this time became very clever at making tools. They used a special way called the Levallois technique. This method helped them shape stone cores more carefully. This made the stone flakes more consistent and useful.

They used these flakes to make stone-tipped spears. These were the very first composite tools. A composite tool is made of two or more parts. They attached the sharp stone to wooden shafts for hunting. This helped them hunt large animals more effectively.

Life was also changing in how people ate and lived. Humans began to use fire widely about 250,000 years ago. They used it to cook their food.

Some people even used fire to defrost meat in cold places. They also learned to hunt fish and catch shellfish. In the Congo, people used barbed points to catch large catfish. They even learned to smoke and dry meat. This helped them store food for later use.

Social life became much more organized during these years. People lived in small groups that were very equal. This means they shared things fairly to avoid hunger.

They even took care of the older members of their groups. Groups also began to trade with each other long ago. They traded rare items like ochre for use in paint. This trade helped groups survive during hard times like droughts. It shows how much they relied on one another.

We can see early signs of art and belief in this era. At Blombos Cave, people made beads and bracelets.

They also used ochre as body paint. Some researchers found old burials in places like Israel and Croatia. These burials might show that people were thinking about an afterlife. Other scientists think the burials were for different reasons. Even so, these finds show how complex their lives were becoming. It was a bridge to the modern world.
