Lower Paleolithic

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Lower Paleolithic was the very first part of the Old Stone Age. It was a time of huge changes for early humans. This period began about 3.3 million years ago. It lasted until about 300,000 years ago. During this time, early people learned to make stone tools. These tools helped them survive in a changing world.

Early tools were quite simple at first. The oldest tools were found at a place called Lomekwi 3 in Kenya. These tools are 3.3 million years old. Later, a group called Homo habilis used Oldowan tools. They used these stones to cut meat from animals. They also used them to break bones to reach the marrow inside. This helped them find more food to eat.

Climate changes in East Africa changed how people lived. The land became much drier. Forests turned into wide, grassy savannahs. This made it harder to find fruit. Because of this, early humans had to find new food. They began to scavenge for meat. This change may have helped them start using early forms of communication. They needed to talk to work together to find food.

A new group called Homo erectus appeared about 1.8 million years ago. They were very important because they began to hunt instead of just scavenging. They lived in large groups to stay safe. These people also moved out of Africa and into Eurasia. We can find their tools in places like Malaysia. Some fossils, like the Peking Man, are 700,000 years old.

As time went on, tools and brains grew more complex. A group called Homo heidelbergensis appeared about 600,000 years ago. They made better stone axes. They might have even used an early form of language. By 300,000 years ago, the Middle Paleolithic began. This is when Homo sapiens, our own ancestors, first appeared.
