A hand axe is a very special stone tool from long ago. It is the longest-used tool in all of human history. These tools were made by early humans like Homo erectus. They were used for a very long time. Most people used them between 1.6 million and 100,000 years ago.

These tools belong to a time called the Acheulean period. They are very important for understanding how early people lived. Scientists study them to learn about the past.

Making a hand axe takes a lot of skill and work. A person starts with a large piece of stone. They often use stones like flint or chert. To shape the stone, they use a way called knapping. This means hitting one stone against another to chip away pieces.

This process removes the outer layer of the stone. The result is a tool with two wide sides. Because of this, experts call them bifaces. Many look like the shape of an almond.

For a long time, people did not know these were tools. In the year 1800, John Frere drew a picture of one. This was the first time they were recognized as prehistoric tools. Before that, people had different ideas about where they came from. Many called them thunderstones.

They thought the stones fell from the sky during storms. Some people even thought lightning made them inside the earth. In some rural areas, people still use them as charms to stay safe from storms.

Researchers have many theories about how these tools were used. Most think they were mainly used for cutting meat. The wide base made it easy for a hand to grip.

Some people thought they were weapons to throw at animals. Others believe they were used for digging or scraping. Some even suggest they were used for social reasons. Some tools were made with so much detail they might have been for rituals.

Hand axes connect us to the very first human creators. They show how humans learned to plan and shape their world. Even though we use metal tools now, these stone tools were amazing. They were used across Africa, Europe, and Asia.
